What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the main message or messages in a classical speech or essay. They trace how the author develops each message through claims, examples, reasoning, and rhetorical choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state each central idea as a complete, precise claim. They use evidence from different parts of the text and explain how examples, reasoning, and rhetorical choices develop the ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a broad topic, such as justice, instead of stating the author’s message about justice. They may rely on one famous line or summarize the text without explaining how the author builds an idea.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short excerpt from Cicero. Ask: “State one central idea, cite two supporting details, and explain how each detail develops that idea.”

Ways to Teach It
Cut a Cicero excerpt into paragraph strips; pairs order them, label each paragraph’s role, and connect it to a central idea.
Discuss or write: How does the speaker’s view of duty develop from the opening claim to the final appeal?
Play Evidence Match by pairing quotation cards with central idea cards, then require teams to defend each match.
Compare a classical speech with a modern public address, noting how each speaker develops an idea about citizenship or leadership.
