What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add one picture, sound, video, or recording to an oral or written task. The chosen media should help the audience understand the message.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a picture, sound, or recording that clearly connects to their words. They can explain what the media adds for the audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a picture or sound only because they like it. They may also add media that repeats the message without making it clearer.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to write two sentences about an animal and add one picture or sound. Have them explain how the media helps the audience understand.

Ways to Teach It
Students write about a rainy day, then add a drawing or recorded rain sound that gives the audience more information.
Show a short sentence with two possible pictures and ask, "Which picture helps the reader understand more, and why?"
Play Media Match by having students pair sentence cards with picture or sound cards, then explain each match.
Students make a digital lunch menu with one food description and a photo that helps classmates know what they could order.
