What to have ready before students begin.
Select 5-8 key weather terms (precipitation, forecast, humidity, etc.). Create vocabulary templates with sections for definition, illustration, examples, non-examples, and sentences.
A classroom-ready sequence from launch to follow-up.
Introduce the activity by modeling a completed vocabulary map for the word 'temperature.'
Distribute vocabulary word cards to individuals or pairs.
For each assigned word, students complete their map with:
The word in large text at center
A student-friendly definition
An illustration or collage image representing the term
2-3 synonyms and antonyms (if applicable)
Real-world examples where this term applies
A sentence using the word correctly
Students add color-coded connections between related weather terms.
Gallery walk: Post completed maps around the room and have students tour the 'vocabulary museum,' adding one new fact to each classmate's map.
As review, play 'I Spy' using the visual elements of the maps as clues.
Adjust the activity without losing its core purpose.
For English language learners, include native language translations. For advanced students, add etymology information or scientific background.
Use these signals to assess understanding.
Check maps for accuracy of definitions and appropriateness of examples. Have students use their vocabulary maps as reference during a weather unit assessment.
