Example lesson context
Gather these before class.
What to have ready before students begin.
Clear space for movement. Prepare 4-6 discussion questions or prompts. Plan movement management. Establish hand-raising signal for finding partners.
A classroom-ready sequence from launch to follow-up.
Explain: 'We'll practice our Spanish vocabulary by talking with multiple partners.'
The routine: Stand up, push in your chair. Put your hand up. Find someone else with hand up. High-five, hands go down.
Practice the routine once without content.
First prompt: 'Tell your partner three foods in Spanish.'
'Stand up, hand up, pair up!' Students find partners.
Partners discuss for 60-90 seconds. Both people must share.
'Thank your partner. Hand up, find someone new!'
New prompt: 'Ask your partner how they're feeling in Spanish. They answer in Spanish.'
Partners discuss.
Continue for 4-6 rounds with different prompts.
Return to seats. Debrief: 'What was challenging? What do we need to practice more?'
Adjust the activity without losing its core purpose.
Pair struggling students with supportive partners for first round. Provide prompt cards students can reference. For advanced students, require longer responses or follow-up questions.
Use these signals to assess understanding.
Circulate and listen to partner discussions. Note common errors for reteaching. Count partnerships to ensure full participation. Debrief reveals understanding.
