Detailed Example
Geometric Shapes (Mathematics - 2nd Grade)
Materials Needed
- Scavenger hunt worksheets with shape names and pictures
- Clipboards
- Pencils
- Optional: digital cameras or tablets for taking photos
Preparation
Create a worksheet listing shapes to find (circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, hexagons). Set boundaries for the hunt (classroom, hallway, or playground).
Step-by-Step Instructions
Introduce or review geometric shapes with students.
Explain that students will work in pairs to find real-world examples of each shape on their worksheet.
For each shape, students should either: draw the object they found, write where they found it, or take a picture if using devices.
Set a time limit (15-20 minutes) and safety rules.
After the hunt, gather students to share and compare findings.
Create a class chart organizing shapes by categories (natural objects vs. human-made objects).
Differentiation Strategies
For younger students, focus on basic shapes only. For older students, include 3D shapes like cubes and spheres, or have them measure dimensions of the shapes they find.
Assessment Guidelines
Check worksheets for accurate identification of shapes. During sharing, ask students to explain how they know an object represents a particular shape.
