Detailed Example
Force and Motion Concepts (Science - 3rd Grade)
Materials Needed
- Sentence stem worksheets at different levels
- Word banks with key vocabulary
- Visual support cards showing forces in action
- Real objects for demonstration (ball, ramp, toy car)
- Completed sentence examples
- Recording sheet for student responses
- Sentence stem posters for classroom display
- Partner check rubric
Preparation
Create differentiated sentence stem worksheets related to force and motion concepts. Develop word banks with key vocabulary (push, pull, gravity, friction, force, motion, direction, speed). Prepare visual support cards showing examples of different forces. Set up simple demonstration stations with objects that illustrate force concepts.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Concept and vocabulary introduction (8-10 minutes):
Demonstrate force and motion concepts using simple objects (pushing a toy car, dropping a ball)
Introduce key vocabulary with visual supports
Have students act out different forces (pushing, pulling, friction slowing them down)
Modeling sentence completion (5 minutes):
Display sample sentence stems on board
Model thinking aloud while completing stems with accurate vocabulary:
'When I push a ball, it moves in the direction of the ________.'
'Friction is a force that makes objects move ________.'
Demonstrate referring to word bank when needed
Guided practice (7-8 minutes):
Complete 2-3 sentence stems as a class
Call on students to suggest appropriate words
Discuss why certain words fit better than others
Check that completed sentences are scientifically accurate
Independent practice (10-12 minutes):
Distribute leveled sentence stem worksheets
Students work individually to complete 8-10 stems about force and motion
Encourage use of word banks and visual supports
Teacher circulates to provide assistance
Partner check (5 minutes):
Pairs exchange papers and check each other's sentences
Use simple rubric: scientific accuracy, vocabulary usage, complete sentences
Discuss any disagreements or questions
Oral language practice (8-10 minutes):
Students take turns reading completed sentences aloud to a partner
Partners provide feedback on clarity and vocabulary usage
Challenge option: Say sentences without looking at paper
Extension activity: Students create their own sentence stems about force and motion for classmates to complete.
Wrap-up: Add key completed sentences to a class Force and Motion concept wall.
Differentiation Strategies
Create three levels of sentence stems: Level 1 with word banks and simpler concepts, Level 2 with more complex concepts but word banks, and Level 3 with more advanced vocabulary and no word banks. For non-writers, provide options for oral completion or drawing. For advanced students, create stems that require causal reasoning or prediction.
Assessment Guidelines
Review completed worksheets for scientific accuracy and appropriate vocabulary usage. Listen to oral readings to assess pronunciation and fluency with scientific language. Note which students are ready to generate language independently versus those who still need scaffolding.
