- Sample postcards for modeling
Preparation
Create postcard templates (4x6 inch). Front has space for illustration, back has address section and message area with lines. Prepare sample postcard showing expected format.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Show real postcards. Notice: Limited space, has picture, greeting, brief message, signature.
Challenge: Summarize what you've learned about Colonial America as if you visited there and are writing home.
Front of postcard: Draw a scene representing something important you learned.
Back of postcard: Address it to someone (Mom, friend, younger student).
Write your message. Include:
Greeting
3-4 sentences summarizing key things you 'saw'
At least 2 specific facts or details
Sign-off
Challenge: Make it sound like you were really there. Use 'I saw...' 'I learned...'
Remember: Postcards are SHORT. Every word counts.
Writing time (10-15 min): Complete front and back.
Gallery walk or partner share: Read postcards aloud.
Extension: Mail actual postcards to families sharing what students learned.
Differentiation Strategies
Provide word banks and sentence frames. Allow dictation for struggling writers. For advanced students, require specific vocabulary use or a more complex audience (expert in the field).
Assessment Guidelines
Check for accurate content in limited space. Evaluate whether key points are captured. Look for creative connection between illustration and message.
