Materials Needed
- Student drafts or work to share
- Discussion prompts
- Timer
- Two rows of desks facing each other
- Bell or chime for rotations
Preparation
Arrange desks in two facing rows. Prepare 4-6 discussion prompts. Plan timing: 3-4 minutes per partner. Create rotation system. Have student work ready.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Arrange room: Two rows of desks facing each other. Students sit across from a partner.
Explain: 'You'll have short conversations with multiple partners about your writing. Each round is 3 minutes.'
What to share: Read your introduction paragraph to your partner.
What to discuss: Partner gives one specific compliment and one specific suggestion.
Round 1: 'Start! A reads to B. B responds.' (90 seconds) 'Switch! B reads to A.' (90 seconds)
Bell rings: 'One row shifts one seat to the right. End person moves to the other end.'
New partners. Round 2: Same prompts OR new focus area.
Rotate 4-6 times so students get multiple perspectives.
After rotations, reflection time: 'What feedback will you use? What patterns did you hear?'
Closing share: 'What was the most helpful feedback you received today?'
Differentiation Strategies
Provide feedback sentence stems. Pair strategically for first round. Allow shy students to share written summaries instead of reading aloud. For advanced students, require connections between rounds.
Assessment Guidelines
Listen to conversations for quality of feedback. Note what students learn from multiple perspectives. Collect reflection on most helpful feedback received.
