Materials Needed

  • Discussion prompt on board
  • Safe walking path (hallway, outdoor area, or around room)
  • Timer
  • Return signal (bell, music)

Preparation

Plan a walking route that's safe and long enough. Prepare focused discussion questions. Establish walking norms (stay with partner, appropriate voices, return signal). Get necessary permissions for hallway use.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.

After introducing integer operations, announce: 'We're going on a Walk and Talk to process this learning.'

2.

Assign partners (or use clock buddies).

3.

Display discussion prompt: 'Explain to your partner why a negative times a negative equals a positive. Use an example.'

4.

Establish route: 'Walk down the hallway to the water fountain and back. Stay with your partner.'

5.

Norms: Conversation voices, stay together, switch who's talking at the turn-around point.

6.

'When you hear the music, return to your seats. Go!'

7.

Teacher walks too, listening to conversations and noting understanding.

8.

Walk takes about 5-7 minutes.

9.

Return to seats. Quick share-out: 'What explanation did your partner give that made sense?'

10.

Address any misconceptions heard during the walk.

Differentiation Strategies

Pair students strategically for support. Provide conversation prompts on cards for struggling students. For advanced pairs, give extension questions for the return trip.

Assessment Guidelines

Observe conversations as you walk among pairs. Note energy and engagement levels. Debrief questions reveal depth of understanding. Compare to seated discussions.
