Detailed Example

Setting Up Classroom Partnerships (Any Subject)

Materials Needed

  • Clock buddy template for each student
  • Class list for tracking partnerships
  • Timer for partnership activities

Preparation

Create clock face templates with 12 appointment slots. Plan initial setup activity carefully. Create master list of all partnerships for reference. Consider strategic pairings for certain times.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.

Distribute clock buddy templates. Explain: 'You'll make 12 appointments with different classmates for the year.'

2.

For strategic pairings (teacher-assigned), call out: '12 o'clock - find a partner whose name starts with the same letter as yours.'

3.

When students find a partner, they write each other's names at 12 o'clock.

4.

For other times, give criteria or allow free choice: '3 o'clock - find someone you don't know well yet.'

5.

Rule: No one can be on your clock more than once.

6.

Complete all 12 appointments over 10-15 minutes.

7.

Collect clocks to verify everyone has 12 different partners. Resolve any conflicts.

8.

Throughout the year, use clocks for quick pairing: 'Turn to your 9 o'clock partner and discuss...'

9.

Students retrieve clocks, find their partner, begin activity immediately.

10.

Variation: Assign certain 'times' strategically - 12 o'clock is always a high/low mixed pair.

Differentiation Strategies

Assist students who struggle to find partners during setup. Create some assigned pairings for specific times. Use visual clock faces for younger students.

Assessment Guidelines

Monitor partnership quality over time. Note which 'appointments' work well and which need adjustment. Use partnership activities to assess collaboration skills.
