Detailed Example
Summarizing a Science Unit (Science - 5th Grade)
Materials Needed
- Large poster paper
- Markers, colored pencils
- Content notes and resources
- Planning template
- Rubric for assessment
Preparation
Form groups of 3-4 students. Prepare poster paper and supplies. Create planning template for groups. Develop clear expectations and rubric. Decide on required elements.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Assign groups and explain: 'You'll create a poster summarizing our ecosystems unit. Everyone contributes.'
Required elements: title, 3-5 key concepts with explanations, at least 3 visuals, vocabulary definitions, one connection to real life.
Planning time (10 min): As a group, complete planning template. Who does what? What goes where?
Assign roles: writer(s), illustrator(s), organizer. Roles can rotate.
Everyone must have a marker in hand at some point - no passengers.
Poster creation time (20-25 min): Work simultaneously on different sections.
Check-ins: 'Show me where each person is working.'
Final 5 minutes: Review as group. Fill gaps. Make sure it's accurate.
Gallery walk: Post completed work. Groups present their poster to visitors.
Reflection: 'What went well in your collaboration? What would you do differently?'
Differentiation Strategies
Assign specific roles based on student strengths. Provide graphic organizer templates. For advanced groups, require synthesis across unit topics rather than just summarizing each part.
Assessment Guidelines
Evaluate for content accuracy, visual organization, and evidence of collaboration. Check that all group members contributed. Use rubric addressing content, visuals, and teamwork.
