Detailed Example

Reviewing Unit on Colonial America (History - 5th Grade)

Materials Needed

  • ABC Brainstorm template with letter grid
  • Notes or resources from the unit (optional)
  • Timer
  • Colored pencils for categorizing

Preparation

Create ABC template with boxes for each letter. Decide if this is open-book review or closed-note assessment. Prepare extension categories for early finishers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.

Distribute ABC Brainstorm sheets. Today's topic: Colonial America.

2.

Challenge: Write one word, name, or phrase related to Colonial America for as many letters as possible.

3.

Examples: A might be 'apprentice' or 'Atlantic Ocean,' B might be 'Boston Tea Party' or 'Blacksmith.'

4.

Set timer for 8-10 minutes. Work individually first.

5.

Remind: Some letters are hard (X, Z). It's okay to skip and come back.

6.

After individual time, pair up. Compare sheets. Add ideas you didn't have in a different color.

7.

Class share: Go through the alphabet, collecting different answers for each letter.

8.

Discuss: Which letters were hardest? What does that tell us about the topic?

9.

For challenging letters, class brainstorms together.

10.

Extension: Categorize your words (people, places, events, objects) using color coding.

Differentiation Strategies

Allow pairs from the start for struggling students. Provide word banks for ELLs. For advanced students, require a phrase or sentence for each letter rather than just a word.

Assessment Guidelines

Count letters completed for fluency measure. Review for accuracy and depth. Note patterns in what students remember and what they forgot. Use blank letters to identify reteaching needs.
