Reviewing Vocabulary (Foreign Language - 6th Grade)

Materials Needed

  • Question cards with answer on back (one per student)
  • Music for movement (optional)
  • Signal for attention

Preparation

Create cards with question on front, answer on back. Vocabulary cards: Spanish word on front, English on back. Make enough for each student plus extras. Color-code by difficulty if desired.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.

Distribute one card per student. 'Don't show anyone your answer.'

2.

Take 30 seconds to study your card. Learn both the question and answer.

3.

Explain Quiz-Quiz-Trade:

Find a partner, high-five

If correct, praise! If incorrect, coach and re-ask

Switch: Partner B quizzes Partner A

Trade cards

Find a new partner, repeat

Model with a student volunteer.

5.

'When music plays, find a partner. When it stops, you should be quizzing.'

Start music. Students mingle, find partners, quiz.

Circulate, listening and helping with coaching.

After 8-10 minutes, stop. 'How many different partners did you have?'

Review: Which cards were hardest? Let's practice those together.

Differentiation Strategies

Color-code cards by difficulty; allow students to choose level. Pair ELLs with supportive partners initially. For advanced students, require explanation of why the answer is correct.

Assessment Guidelines

Circulate and listen for accuracy. Note common mistakes. Count how many successful trades students complete. End with whole-class review of challenging cards.
