Materials Needed
- Index cards (two per student)
- Current class novel
- Timer
- Discussion group seating
Preparation
Have students read assigned chapter before class. Prepare index cards. Arrange desks in groups of 4-5. Create timing structure for rotations.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Before class: Students read the chapter and select two quotes that stood out to them - interesting, confusing, important, or surprising.
On the front of each index card, write the quote with page number. On the back, write why you chose it and what you think it means.
Form groups of 4-5 students.
Round structure: One student reads their quote aloud (front of card only). Do NOT share the back yet.
Other group members respond: What do you think this quote means? Why might it be important? What does it reveal about characters or themes?
Discussion continues for 2-3 minutes with the original student staying silent.
After others have spoken, the original student flips the card and 'has the last word' - sharing their interpretation.
Rotate to next group member's quote. Continue until all have shared at least one.
Differentiation Strategies
Pre-select quotes for struggling readers to choose from. Allow ELLs to write back of card in native language. Challenge advanced students to select quotes that connect across chapters or to other texts.
Assessment Guidelines
Observe group discussions for depth of analysis. Collect cards to review quote selection and interpretation quality. Note students who struggle to find meaningful passages.
